So, its that time of year again...

As Christmas approaches and the inevitable overindulgence of food and drink looms, many of us start to think about getting in shape for the new year. But how do we keep that motivation going long after the festive season has passed? Here are some tips to help make 2017 a healthier year:

  • Set realistic targets and goals – one of the main reasons people struggle to keep going with their training is that they set unrealistic goals, such as losing a certain amount of weight by a specific date. Alternatively, they might change too much too soon in their lives. For instance, someone who doesn't currently attend the gym and then decides to train five days a week is unlikely to stick to it. Instead, start off by attending the gym a couple of times a week and then gradually increase the number of sessions.

  • Nutrition is key – what you eat plays a massive role in the results you will achieve and how quickly you will achieve them. Keep a rough food diary, either by hand or by using the Myfitnesspal app, to see what your current intake is. This will probably surprise you when you see it, whether you are over or under eating. Again, suddenly going from a not-so-great diet to wanting to eat 100% clean seven days a week is too big a step for most people. Over the course of a few weeks, introduce healthier options and replace the less healthy ones to make the change more sustainable.

  • Do some research into the form of training you would like to do to reach your goal – this could be as simple as a quick internet search, speaking to people you know who are into fitness, or consulting a personal trainer. At Challenge Life, we offer a free, no-pressure consultation to discuss your goals and see if personal training could benefit you. We also offer Start Up Packages that provide a discounted way of working with a personal trainer to experience the benefits firsthand.

Making a lifestyle change can be challenging, but it's important to remember that the journey is just as important as the destination. It's not just about reaching a certain weight or being able to run a certain distance; it's about improving your health, your energy levels, and your overall quality of life. By setting realistic goals, making gradual changes to your diet and exercise routine, and seeking guidance when you need it, you can make 2017 the year that you achieve your health and fitness goals.
